If you’re reading this, you’re breathing! From that very first outraged cry in the delivery room, unless there’s an obvious problem, breathing is a fairly automatic business that most of us take for granted. But dysfunctional breathing patterns, such as habitual mouth-breathing or chronic over-breathing often go unrecognized and affect both our energy reserve and virtually every area of health. Healthy breathing should be light, unforced, silent, and capable of supporting all the activities of daily life.
Buteyko Breathing is a simple, easily learned set of exercises that requires no special equipment or long-term expense. Practiced regularly, it maximizes the delivery of oxygen to all the cells of your body. Retraining our systems to use the oxygen we take in more efficiently and effectively can help improve areas as diverse as digestion, energy, mood stability, sleep quality, and oral health. In addition to chronic respiratory issues, such as asthma, rhinitis, and chronic congestion, you may benefit from breath retraining if you’ve experienced any of these symptoms of poor breath hygiene:
- Chronic hyperventilation (taking big gulps of breath)
- Frequent yawning, breathlessness or shortness of breath
- Allergies
- Acid reflux
- Fatigue
- Snoring and sleep apnea
- Stress
- Disrupted sleep
- Anxiety
- Inflammatory conditions
- Reduced immunity
Four 90-minute private Skype sessions taken over the course of a month are usually sufficient to learn the technique and start to reap the benefits of more efficient oxygen uptake. Or you can opt to join a semi-private experience and learn with up to six other people. Whichever option you select, you’ll be invited to join a private Facebook group where you can ask me questions, interact with others traveling the same path, or take advantage of periodic live Q&A sessions.
